ÉDOUARD MANET
Berthe Morisot.

Etching on imitation Japan paper, 1872. 119x79 mm; 4 3/4x3 1/4 inches, full margins. Second state (of 3), before the cleaning of the lower margin, with the delicate lines in the background and before the cancellation circles upper and lower center edges; likely from the Grennevilliers edition, 1890, arranged by Suzanne Manet. A superb, richly-inked and early impression, very scarce in this issue.

We have found only one other early, second state impression similar to this at auction in the past 30 years, which sold at Kornfeld, Bern, June 19, 1987, lot 789. Harris lists a first state impression in the New York Public Library and Fisher cites a second state impression, from the 1894 Dumont edition, at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Guérin 59; Harris 75.
