Etching printed in dark, brownish-black on cream laid paper, 1866-67. 398x330 mm; 15 3/4>x13 inches, full margins. Third state (of 3). A very good, well-inked impression of this extremely scarce etching.
We have found only 7 other impressions at auction in the past 25 years.
This etching was never published, either in lifetime or posthumous impressions, and there are few extant examples. The original plate for the etching passed from Manet to the Parisian publisher Henri Guérard, who pulled some impressions from the plate, then to the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago (the plate was never cancelled).
