Montagny was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825) and worked in Italy from 1804-1815. There is an album containing more than four hundred drawings and tracings by Montagny reproducing antiquities from collections in Rome and Naples now in the Getty Research Institute, Malibu.
