ÉMILE BERNARD
La Chanteuse du Café-Concert.

Zincograph with hand coloring in watercolor, 1888. 290x232 mm; 11 1/2x9 inches, small (full ?) margins. First state (of 3). Signed in brown crayon, lower right. A superb impression of this extremely scarce print.

Bernard is probably best remembered as a friend and sometimes artistic influence on both Gauguin and Van Gogh. The same year this print was created, Bernard worked with Gauguin in Pont-Aven, a few months before Gauguin arrived in Arles to work with Van Gogh.

Van Gogh had made a watercolor copy of Bernard's seminal Bretonnes au Pardon, 1888, which he sent to his brother, the art dealer Theo Van Gogh, in Paris, singing its praises. Morane 5; Boyle-Turner B 1.
