Antonio Pérez González (Ñiko) grew up in the midst of the Cuban Revolution, witnessing Fidel Castro's transition to power in the newly formed Communist state at just 18. The following decade heralded a renaissance of Cuban poster art, as "the noncommercial mass poster was the direct fruit of the revolution, a conscious application of art in the service of social improvement" (Cushing p. 7). Ñiko was particularly drawn to this proactive artistic application, infusing his designs with the ideologies and achievements of the young government. Here, he wryly depicts a boat afloat on a multicolored sea under Castro's famous adage "If I set out, I arrive… If I arrive, I enter… If I enter, I triumph," possibly implying further political conquests. With the bright colors and bold lines typical of 1960s and 70s graphic design, Mederos creates an image of strength and buoyancy, touting the triumph of Cuban Communism.
