Sale 2133 Lot 125
ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [PRELIMINARY SKETCH.] Circa 1900.
22 x 10 inches.
Condition B-: tears and wrinkles through image. Thin vellum.
A rough sketch of a young woman looking over her shoulder, within a decorative border and half-enveloped in an arcing curve of design. The drawing bears a plaque that reads "Ete / Preliminary Drawing 1903." While obviously partially incorrect (Mucha's last set of The Seasons was designed in 1900), the sketch does bear similarity to the design for the 1900 version. It is similar in the way the woman is looking backwards, the position of her arms and the way in which her robe is falling off her shoulders. The drawing is a peliminary study for plate no. 8 (Dover no. 44) in Documents Decoratifs.
