(WHALING.) Legal archive relating to injury suits brought against the chief mate of a whaling vessel. 10 items: 7 signed manuscript depositions, an arbitration notice, a subpoena, and an order to attach the defendant's estate; various sizes, condition generally strong. New London, CT, 1847

      Estimate $400 - 600

Involves two separate suits brought against chief mate Robert Brown of the Montezuma. One suit was brought by Charles F. Jones, the other brought by James J. Lugar, involving physical assault on two occasions (in August 1844 and August 1846). Documents include depositions by witnesses, a subpoena, a court order to attach Brown's estate, and more. Brown must have been a difficult fellow to get along with.
The incidents occurred on the last voyage of the ship Montezuma. The ship sailed from New London on 4 June 1844 under Captain Baker. She returned on 24 May 1847. Starbuck, page 418; Whaling Masters, page 43. Provenance: collection of E. Lee Dorsett (bookplate).
