Lithographed strip map on five joined sheets, rolling into its original maple cylinder spool case; verso with publisher's imprint, tables, advertisements, places of interest, a wood engraving of Printing House Square featuring the New York Times and Tribune buildings, additionally a small map and description of Hays City, Kansas. 122x3 inches map size; 3 3/4x1 3/4 inches case size; lower extremity browned and frayed with small printed loss, dime-sized area of loss between John and Fulton Streets, several small closed tears; survives well despite its fragile and ephemeral nature. St. Louis, 1867
Estimate $2,000 - 3,000
Unrolling from its handsome original wooden case, the map follows a path uptown along Broadway, extending more than ten feet from Beaver Street to 14th Street. Banks, churches, goods shops, publishers and booksellers, monuments, retailers, tailors, hotels and oyster houses are some of the many sites detailed along the way. Publishers Coloney & Fairchild are known for their rare ribbon map of the Mississippi River (see lot 133), which itself is known only in a few examples. However we find no other examples of the present map ever having appeared on the market, nor even so much as a bibliographic reference to this unusual and impressive map of nineteenth-century Manhattan.Price Realized (with Buyer's Premium) $4,250
