Triptych of three toned gelatin silver prints, with Prestype and frame, 1989-90. 406x1219 mm; 16x48 inches, including the frame. Edition of 3. From the Colored People series.
Provenance: collection of the artist, New York; P.P.O.W., New York; private collection, New York.
Exhibited: Carrie Mae Weems, Matrix Gallery, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut, April 21 - July 7, 1991, with the label on the frame back.
Chocolate Colored Man is a significant and very scarce work from the artist's important 1987-88 series. The triptych was also included in Carrie Mae Weems the 1993-95 National Museum of Women in the Arts traveling solo exhibition. The artist printed another edition of 5 in 1997, but of a single image, and not as a triptych.
