      (CHILDREN'S LITERATURE.) SEWELL, ANNA. Black Beauty: His Grooms and Companions. The Autobiography of a Horse. Wood-engraved frontispiece by C. Hewitt. 8-page publisher's catalogue at the end. 12mo, publisher's red pictorial cloth gilt, rebacked with the original spine laid down, covers scuffed and rubbed; joints repaired, ownership signature above author's inscription on the first blank, occasional light blemish to contents; preserved in decorative leather gilt drop back box with oval morocco pictorial device inset reproducing front cover. London: Jarrold and Sons, [1877]

      first edition, rare presentation copy, inscribed by the author: "For the patients of the / London Temperance Hospital / with the Author's best wishes." One of only a few known presentation copies as Sewell died only five months after publication. The binding is similar to Carter's variant B in that the horse's head and rustic portions of the frame are in black while the floral decoration and reins are in gilt, but here the title in black (not gilt). Carter, More Binding Variants, p. 37.
