General George Custer and his wife Elizabeth Bacon Custer are seated, while the general's younger brother Thomas stands behind them. Eleven years later, Thomas would fall alongside his brother at Little Bighorn. The manuscript caption reads "Genl. Custer, Mrs. Custer, and Lieut. Custer, bro. of Genl.
