(ART.) Marshall, Augustus; photographer. Carte-de-visite portrait of the sculptor Edmonia Lewis. Albumen photograph, 3 3/4 x 2 1/4 inches, on original mount with photographer's backmark; mount cropped on bottom edge, otherwise minimal wear. Boston, circa 1864-71

A portrait of Mary Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907), taken during her 7-year stay in Boston, where her sculptures were popular in abolitionist circles. She spent most of her later career in Rome. She was essentially the only African-American woman to make any headway into white mainstream artistic circles in the 19th century.
