      (CIVIL RIGHTS.) Poster for a concert to aid the Martin Luther King Defense Fund. Illustrated poster in red, black, and yellow, 24 1/4 x 18 inches, on card stock; minor wear to upper left corner, a few staple holes, minimal soiling. New York: E.J. Warner Poster Corporation, 17 May [1960]

      The poster is headed "To Aid Southern States Sit-In Movement, Martin Luther King Defense, an Evening of Music and Drama for Freedom Now." The impressive list of performers includes Harry Belafonte, Mahalia Jackson, Sidney Poitier, Shelley Winters, and Diahann Carroll (with photographs of each), plus a "Freedom Drama" written by Lorraine Hansberry. News accounts show that the concert was held as the culmination of a day's rallies in celebration of the sixth anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision.
