      EDWARD GOREY.
Kisses. An early study of a woman's profile, circa 1940. Graphite and colored pencil on paper, with faint profile sketches to either side. Sheet measures 280x209 mm; 11x8 1/4-inches. Signed "Sinjun" (his early pseudonym) and with a lipstick kiss seal (bleeding through from verso). Vertical and horizontal fold marks and with Gorey's fingerprints in white areas. Tipped to matte and framed. Provenance: Edward Gorey to Chicago friend, online auction, to present owner.

      Estimate $800 - 1,200

Created by Gorey while a high school student at the Francis W. Parker School in Chicago, preceding his studies at the Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard. While most of his pseudonyms were anagrams of his "Edward Gorey," "Sinjun" was a phonetic version of his middle name, St. John.
