      Sale 2512 Lot 215

VERBIEST, PIETER. Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographi Emendata auct: I : Uerbist. Engraved double-hemispheric world map. 16 3/4x22 inches sheet size, lower margin wide, others shaved to platemark; original hand-color in full; backed to a sheet of laid paper at an early time, original folds, light surface soiling, several pin-size wormholes. Antwerp, 1636

      Estimate $10,000 - 15,000

A spectacularly attractive separately-published Dutch world map. The spandrels surrounding the hemispheres are richly decorated by peasant-class agricultural allegories of the four seasons. Extremely rare, with Shirley making mention of only two (privately held) copies known to him. Shirley 343; Tooley Dictionary page 638.
