      RUTH MONRO AUGUR
      Oklahoma Land Rush.

Oil on canvas, circa late 1930s. 3035x4191 mm; 119 1/2x165 inches. Signed in oil, lower center recto.

      Ex-collection private collection, Maryland.

Augur (1886-1967) was born in Austin, Texas, and was raised in Denver, Colorado. She received her foundational artistic training at the Student School of Art in Denver, Colorado then in 1905 won a scholarship to the New York School of Art, studying under Robert Henri (see lot 27 and 29) and William Merritt Chase.

She returned to the West and worked initially in the newspaper business while maintaining a side practice in art. She later won a Works Progress Administration commission to paint murals in the county courthouse at Enid, Oklahoma. The murals covered 1136 square feet and depicted the history of the Cherokee Strip Land Run, or the Land Run of 1893, which marked the opening to the settlement of the Cherokee Outlet in Oklahoma's fourth and largest land run, in what would become the U.S. state of Oklahoma in 1907.
