RALPH CHUBB (1892-1960)
The Heavenly Cupid, or The True Paradise of Loves.
Designed, composed, printed, and with 96 lithographed illustrations by Chubb, the text reproducing his calligraphed manuscript. Original 1/2 brown morocco over corduroy-covered boards, by G. Frewin, extremities scuffed, joints starting; owner's penciled signature on front endpaper. Published by the author: Fair Oak [Wolverton], 1933.
Estimate $5,000 - 7,000
first edition, first issue, number 9 of 43 copies signed by chubb. Considered Chubb's greatest work and a true labor of love. Heavenly Cupid, a celebration of the beauty of male youth, began as a smaller work before Chubb added sections, extending it into a lengthy philosophical prose poem. The binding choice of corduroy was to reflect the fabric of country trousers, an experiment that was neither terribly successful nor repeated on future publications. Reid A10a.
