      ARNOLD LOBEL (1933-1987)


      "`We look brave,' said Frog. 'Yes, but are we?' asked Toad."

      Study for the finished illustration published in the chapter "Dragons and Giants," page 43, in Lobel's "Frog and Toad Together" (New York: Harper & Row, 1972). Black marker and graphite on paper 19 1/2x16 1/4 inches, 49.5x41.3 cm., archivally framed to 17 1/2x13 1/2 inches (44.5x34.3 cm.). Not signed.

      Lobel came out to his family in 1974, four years after the first Frog and Toad book was published. The relationship between his beloved same-sex characters often reflected his own experiences.
