Folio, 320x192 mm, contemporary sheep, rebacked with endpapers renewed, badly worn overall, covers detached; contents dampwrinkled and dampstained with occasional marginal foxing, B1 and B2 reinforced in blank gutter, short clean tear in blank outer margin of T4, conspicuous ink stains on pages 220-221.       first edition of an important collection of over 600 case histories divided into treatises on tumors, ulcers, diseases of the anus, scrofula, gunshot wounds, fractures and luxations, and venereal disease. "These case histories constitute a rich and unique historical record of surgical reality in seventeenth-century Britain and have yet to be analysed fully . . . The treatises confirm Wiseman's wide knowledge of surgical literature and his prolific practice on battlefields, in battleships, in London, and elsewhere as a consulting surgeon for all classes of the civil population" (ODNB).
