      (SLAVERY AND ABOLITION.) Henderson, James. Letter to George Washington's nephew regarding the purchase of slaves. Autograph Letter Signed to Bushrod Washington of Mount Vernon, VA. 2 pages, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 inches, plus integral address leaf with inked postmark stamp; folds, minor wear and soiling, slight loss from wax seal. Petersburg, VA, 12 March 1811

      Letter written by James Henderson to Supreme Court Justice Bushrod Washington, nephew of the late president, confirming that Henderson will act as his attorney in the matter of a land purchase and the subsequent purchase of slaves to cultivate the land. "Since my last to you, I have made particular inquiry of the agent, a most intelligent gentleman, respecting the soil of the Dismal Swamp Company's land, & the propriety of appropriating one or two thousands dollars annually from our present large dividends to be laid out in the purchase of Negro boys & lads to have sufficient force in readiness to cultivate the land by the time the juniper timber is exhausted."
