A series of three Medicine Lodge treaties were signed in October 1867 between the United States government and various southern Plains Indian nations. They restricted the tribes to reservations in Indian Territory. The treaties were never ratified by the required 75% majority of tribal members, and were subject to decades of legal challenges. This third treaty covered the Cheyennes and Arapahoes. Offered here is a certified manuscript transcript of the printed treaty. It begins with a manuscript title page, followed by 19 pages of treaty text, with key passages underlined in red, with secretarial signatures of 22 Cheyenne and Arapaho, as well as numerous American officials and President Andrew Johnson. The final leaf is an 1883 statement in a different hand by a Missouri notary public stating that "the foregoing nineteen pages . . . are a true and correct copy of a printed pamphlet." Provenance: personal copy of Spotted Wolf, a signatory for the Arapahoes; by descent to Herbert Walker (born 1870) and his son Sampson Walker (1918-1982); sold by Sampson Walker to Allan Schneider (1925-2005) in 1970, and by his wife in 2014 (bill of sales for both transactions included). With: several pages of provenance documentation including a photograph believed to be of Sampson Walker.
