Additional Details

first edition, rare presentation copy, inscribed by the author: "For the patients of the / London Temperance Hospital / with the Author's best wishes." One of only a few known presentation copies as Sewell died only five months after publication. The binding is similar to Carter's variant B in that the horse's head and rustic portions of the frame are in black while the floral decoration and reins are in gilt, but here the title in black (not gilt). Carter, More Binding Variants, p. 37.
