the de luxe issue in its original state. Considered to be the finest lithographed plate book on nineteenth-century London. "A book of considerable importance; apart from the beauty of its plates, it records London at a period when good pictorial records were few. The London of the 1840s is probably more difficult to reconstruct than that of any period in the nineteenth century" (Abbey, Scenery 239). "Issued in 3 forms. Plain, coloured and mounted on thick cards. The last form which may be called the de luxe edition is the rarest and finest" (Tooley 104). "…his vivid realization of the thronging metropolis in the early 1840's, which made his contemporaries admit that familiar city scenes could be as 'picturesque' as mountains or lakes, has lost none of its appeal" (Ray 87). with: One hand colored lithographed plate from Boys' Picturesque Architecture in Paris, Ghent, Antwerp..., and two plates from S.D. Swarbreck's Sketches in Scotland. Provenance: R. Atherton, Esq., with his original sales receipt from Davis Brothers, Chelsea, July 1928 for £130.
