(MEXICO.) Archive related to a pulque bar in Mexico City. 18 documents (total 173 manuscript pages) bound in one volume. Folio, early stiff vellum, minor wear; minor wear to contents, tasteful early repairs to folding plan. Mexico, 1639-1780

      Estimate $2,500 - 3,500

This assemblage of documents presents the ownership history of a complex of properties which served as a pulque bar from the early 17th century. Pulque, a fermented agave beverage, was popular among Indians and mestizos. The bar was regarded as a nuisance to its neighbors and received official opprobrium, but despite having been sold at least once following an adverse judicial judgment against its owners, it continued to function for at least 150 years at the same location. During the 1770s and 1780s the Count of Regla acquired this and other pulque bars. Included is a detailed 19 x 25-inch scale plan of the property, with its multiple contiguous houses and courtyards, drawn and signed by noted architect Ignacio de Castera in 1779.
