Additional Details

Unrolling from its handsome original wooden case, the map follows a path uptown along Broadway, extending more than ten feet from Beaver Street to 14th Street. Banks, churches, goods shops, publishers and booksellers, monuments, retailers, tailors, hotels and oyster houses are some of the many sites detailed along the way. Publishers Coloney & Fairchild are known for their rare ribbon map of the Mississippi River (see lot 133), which itself is known only in a few examples. However we find no other examples of the present map ever having appeared on the market, nor even so much as a bibliographic reference to this unusual and impressive map of nineteenth-century Manhattan.
