A set of 3 World Tour albums with more than 1200 photographs by a talented and unidentified amateur photographer of a remarkable Grand Voyage. With destinations from the South Seas to East Africa; South Africa to South America; and a final stop in Martinique.
The photographer (who may have been a woman given the interest in photographing women at work and children) was especially adept at capturing indigenous peoples in informal poses. Exotic ceremonies and costumes are counterposed to more quotidian scenes of tradespeople; children are also featured, both on their mothers' backs and independently. Also includes pictures of the smart set enjoying themselves on and off board the S.S. Franconia. The first entitled "Around the Southern Hemisphere, S.S. Franconia," with a total of 400 photographs of the South Seas islands, with prints of Hawaii, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand, and Australia. The second album is untitled, with a total of 400 views of Java, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mombasa (Kenya), Tanzania (Zanzibar), and South Africa. The third album is untitled and features scenes throughout South Africa, with remarkable prints of Zulu women and children, Boer types, a series related to the Premier Mine (near Pretoria), and views of Capetown; the trip continues to Uruguay, Montevideo (Chile), Buenos Aires, Copacabana (Brazil), and concludes on the island Martinique. Silver prints, the images measuring 3 1/2x4 3/4 inches (8.9x12 cm.), the sheets slightly larger, arranged recto/verso 4 per page, each with a cursive caption, in ink, on the mount. Oblong 4tos, the first with a gilt-stamped title. 1927
