Cuban-born Fernández (1928-2006) began his artistic training in his native Havana and continued throughout Europe. His interest in surrealism began during a summer program at the Art Students League in New York City, taught by George Grosz and Yasuo Kuniyoshi. His constraint and abstraction of the human body, paired with repetitive, detailed patterns, create an erotic and macabre aesthetic. Fernández first found wide-spread critical acclaim after one of his paintings was featured in the 1980 film Dressed to Kill. His work has been exhibited alongside Yves Tanguy, Salvador Dalí and Hans Bellmer.
