ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [THE SEASONS.] Group of 4 decorative panels on silk. 1900.
Each approximately 27x12 inches, 66 5/8x30 1/2 cm. F. Champenois, Paris.
Condition varies, generally B+: some fraying and staining at edges; foxing, creasing and minor abrasions in image. Printed on silk. Matted and framed. Unexamined out of frame.
For this, Mucha's third and final allegorical group of The Seasons, the premise remains the same - young women as irresistible representations of the seasons. Here, Mucha's approach is slightly different; he has placed these women within decorative borders and depicted them with their feet on the ground, rather than seemingly floating in air. Mucha also employs a starker and more realistic color scheme than the pastels of 1896. These are the rare variants printed on silk, each with the F. Champenois overprint in the bottom field of the ornamental border. Rennert / Weill 74 (var 1), Lendl p. 192 & 193 (var), Mucha / Bridges P38, P49-51.
