DAVID HAMMONS (1943 - )
Untitled (Double Body Print Collage).

Pigment and ink on paper and printed paper collage on cardboard, 1976. 762x1016 mm; 30x40 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower left.

Provenance: acquired directly from the artist (1976); private collection, California.

This striking body print is an excellent example of David Hammons' mid-1970s incorporation of collage, and only the second double body print by the artist to ever come to auction. In the latter half of his Los Angeles period, Hammons incorporated collage, cutouts and hand coloring with his body prints. Several similar body prints with collage from this mid-1970s period were included in the important Tilton Gallery exhibition, and illustrated in the same-titled catalogue, L. A. Object & David Hammons Body Prints. His printing and hand coloring the collaged works is also documented in Bruce Talamon's photographs from his Slauson Avenue studio in 1974. Another body print collage Ebony Kiss, 1974, includes collage with the same printed brown dragon-motif paper. Tilton/Charwood pp. 92-93 and 154.
