Additional Details

one of only 250 copies signed by both joyce and matisse. this is number 1235 from the total edition of 1500. Sold to members of the Limited Editions Club, all 1500 were signed in pencil by Matisse and sold for $10; randomly numbered copies were additionally signed in pen by Joyce at a slightly higher price of $15. The six Matisse etchings, with their accompanying sketches, depict the Calypso, Aeolus, Cyclops, Nausicaa, Circe and Ithaca episodes of Homer's classic poem rather than the events in Joyce's novel as the artist admittedly did not read the work.--Castleman, A Century of Artists Books, pages 35, 61; The American Livre de Peintre 32; Slocum A22; The Artist and the Book 197.
