first edition, third printing, of a biography of the famed explorer and big-game hunter (1851-1917), in a custom binding designed by millais for the American conservationist Charles Sheldon (1867-1928), a friend and Yukon hunting companion of Selous. According to a note by a former owner, only four examples of the binding were produced.
Accompanying the book are a pencil drawing on paper by Millais of the binding decorations, signed and dated 1920, 200x170 mm, with horizontal crease across the center; and 2 ALsS from Millais to Sheldon concerning the production of the binding and other matters, one page and 4 pages, Compton Brow, Horsham, 3 March 1920 and nd.
