Bortnyik was a founding member of the Hungarian avant-garde movement, MA, with L. Moholy-Nagy and Ernö Barta. He studied at the Bauhaus in Weimar in the early 1920s and, using their design principles, began an important workshop for graphic arts in Budapest that became an important center for poster and advertising art.
