ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) LE VENT QUI PASSE EMPORTE LA JEUNESSE. 1899. 11 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. Condition A. Matted and framed. Although this appears to be a design for a fan, there is no record of a fan ever having been produced. "This design . . . was [originally] intended to decorate the facade of the 'Pavilion of Man,' proposed by Mucha and a group of associates as an ambitious exhibit of the history of mankind at the Paris World's Fair of 1900." (Rennert/Weill p. 252). That project, however, was never realized, and Champenois took Mucha's design and marketed it as "a panel, a postcard, and a handbill or leaflet" (ibid). The image is a romantic allegory of Time watching a maiden as autumn leaves blow out of her hands. The coloring on this piece is of interest as the use of blue is very unusual in Mucha's work.
