A theatrical program for a play, The Terracotta Cart, that was taken from the Hindustani and produced by Lugné-Poë at his avant-garde Théâtre de l'Oevre. Lautrec and other members of the Nabis were closely linked to the avant-garde theater and provided art work for the shows (see Swann auction 2099, lot 163). Here, Lautrec divides the image into three separate parts. On the left, he presents a floral motif upon which he inserts a list of the cast members; in the middle, he depicts the art critic and actor Felix Fénéon delivering a speech from atop an elephant. Elephants were one of Lautrec's favorite animals, often appearing in his monogram, and here they are actually contextually appropriate. On the right side, Lautrec has left the paper dramatically blank, indicating the audience being addressed by the actor.
