This poetic landscape is the largest Edward Bannister oil painting to come to auction and an excellent example of his late painting. Bannister's paintings from the 1890s became less concerned with the human figure in the pastoral landscape. With a freer, painterly approach and thin glazes of color, Bannister's later scenes reflect the New England landscape's atmospheric beauty. They also show the new influence of Impressionism as he moved away from the Barbizon school.
