From the photographer; by descent to his daughter. Her signed letter, in which she describes the day Adams won the Pulitzer Prize in 1969, accompanies the print.

She recounts, "When my dad found out he won the Pulitzer Prize, he brought all of us kids, Amy, Edward, and me out to the shed (along with some of his closest friends), to smoke Pall Malls. My mom was ready to kill him!...Looking back, I now realize how important this photo was--or the moment was for my father...The photo haunted my dad till the day he died. He always told me that he felt he destroyed the life of the general who shot the prisoner. His feelings never changed. I finally grew to understand this."
