first edition. Variant with no catchword on page 213 in Volume 1, and correct catchword "him" on page 39 and page 159 correctly numbered in Volume 2. Roscoe A200; Rothschild 1028; Scott, pages 173-75.
apparently the only known presentation copy, inscribed "from the author" on the title of Volume 1, not in Goldsmith's hand, but the style of the bindings suggests that they were made for presentation. Roscoe A200; Rothschild 1028; Scott, pages 173-75. From the libraries of Robert Hoe, with his booklabel (lot 1444 in his sale at Anderson Galleries, 8 January 1912); Jerome Kern, with his booklabel (lot 573 in his sale at Anderson Galleries, 7 January 1929); Frank J. Hogan (lot 327 in his sale at Parke-Bernet, 24 April 1945); and Bradley Martin, with his bookplate (lot 2871 in his sale at Sotheby's New York, 30 April 1990).
