Additional Details

Esek Hopkins stands on the shoreline with sword in hand, while two American ships in the background fly patriotic banners: a striped flag with the slogan "Don't Tread on Me" similar to the Gadsden flag which flew on Hopkins's flagship, and the other a flag commonly used on American privateers depicting a liberty tree with the words "An Appeal to God." Cresswell 114.
