One of the tipped-in Taylor letters was written on the eve of his departure for California, to Anne Lynch on 26 June 1849: "As I shall not see you again before leaving, let this be my good-bye. I hope to be back from my rambles on the Pacific Coast by December." "Probably the outstanding book on the early gold rush. . . .
