Two illustrations for "By Rocking-Chair Across America." Pen, ink, and wash on illustration board. Frontispiece of Indian Chief with camera measures 483x336 mm; 19x13 1/4 inches; Illustration at page 27 of bear warming himself by a woodstove measures 495x318 mm; 19 1/2x12 1/2. Both signed in ink, lower right. Slightly toned, a few creases at edges, Searle's titles in red pen in upper and lower margins, few surface abrasions on frontispiece image. 1959.

Additional Details

with a first american edition of "by rocking-chair across america" inscribed and signed to friend and fellow illustrator paul coker, jr. of Mad Magazine and Rankin/Bass Television Productions fame. These illustrations were also used in 1959 for a cartoon spread titled "U.S.A. For Beginners" in the British humor magazine Punch and the First English book edition of the work was similarly titled. Searle has penned both titles in the margins of the artwork. The book, co-authored with Alex Atkinson is 8vo, 1/4 cloth over pictorial boards; dust jacket (some wear and chipping). New York, (1959). Laid in is an exhibition pamphlet for Kraushaar Galleies in New York City, September 29-October 17, 1959, which contained these and other works by Searle.
