ROGER BRODERS (1883-1953) MARSEILLE / LA GRANDE MÉTROPOLE INDUSTRIELLE & COMMERCIALE. 1922.
42 1/4x30 1/2 inches, 107 1/4x77 1/2 cm. Cornille & Serre, Paris.
Condition A- / B+: minor restoration and overpainting in text and along horizontal folds; extensively-overpainted margins.
Advertising an industrial and commercial exposition, Broders focuses on the port of Marseille rather than the town, perhaps because it was a gateway to the French colonies in Africa. A variant of the poster bears the French text "Exposition Nationale Coloniale." Commerce and industry are visible in the tangible form of dock workers and their machinery in the foreground, alongside all of the different ships in the harbor. Foremost, is an imposing liner sitting in the bay with a vista of the town in the background. Broders p. 80 (var), Perry / Broders p. 18, Marseille cover and p. 54, La Mer p. 188.
