EDWARD MCKNIGHT KAUFFER (1890-1954) WINTER SALES ARE BEST REACHED BY THE UNDERGROUND. 1922.
39 1/2x24 1/2 inches, 100 1/4x62 1/4 cm. Vincent Brooks Day & Son Ltd., London.
Condition A- / B+: repaired tears and minor replaced losses in margins.
One of three posters that Kauffer designed between 1921 and 1924, promoting the Underground as a way to reach London's department stores for their Winter Sales. During these years, Kauffer was still experimenting with Vorticism. In its 1923 February-March issue, Commercial Art magazine commented that "the poster strikes the note of daring the artist has almost compelled us to expect of him . . . altogether this poster is a masterpiece and a stroke of genius" (p. 104). "Although Kauffer obviously knew and valued contemporary styles such as Vorticism, his works are never derivative. But he does exploit the abstract, the elliptical, the geometric elements that characterize so much Modernist art" (Art for All p. 29). Kauffer 18, Art For All cover and p. 11.
