FRANCIS BERNARD (1900-1979) ARTS MÉNAGERS / GRAND PALAIS. 1933.
38x23 1/4 inches, 96 1/2x59 cm. Paul-Martial, [Paris.]
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and abrasions at edges, into border text. Framed.
Bernard worked for the Salon des Arts Ménagers in the 1930s, not only designing their posters but also their magazine. In those days, the Salon was a major event where all modern household appliances were mass marketed; Bernard strove to create a visual identity that would be worthy of such an exhibition. The stylized representation of a housewife he created was an easily recognizable logotype, along the lines of the character A.M. Cassandre created for Dubonnet and Charles Loupot for Galeries Barbes. With this image, Bernard combines the logotype with a sophisticated photomontage element of a couple attending the exhibition. Weill 371, Mechanical Age fig. 3.19, Berman p. 103, Modernism 133.
