Additional Details

Two young people hunting with a hawk and bow are intended to symbolize the American frontier experience. The race of these symbolic Americans is impossible to guess, though their facial features appear African and their dress might be American Indian, and of course the distinction was not binary by the 18th century. We suspect the German engraver Haid (1704-1767) had little direct familiarity with either group.
