first edition of the renowned drill manual prepared at Valley Forge by Washington's inspector-general Steuben, who was brought in from Prussia to bring military discipline to the American volunteers. The original owner, Captain Edward Yarbrough or Yarborough, served in the 3rd North Carolina Regiment through almost the duration of the war, and had spent the winter of 1777-78 drilling under Steuben's system at Valley Forge.
