Additional Details

"I see from the Washington dispatches that the President is caving in. . . . Those who place any confidence in Andrew Johnson's professions, in regard to Congress, the South, and Reconstruction, only prove to me that they know not the man. He is seeking, under false pretenses, to flunk the whole of you. He would sooner destroy the government than to be outdone by the Radical party. The South, they desire another rebellion, and their movements are all in that direction. Johnson knows this fact well, and he is with them. I am not mistaken, nor am I influenced by prejudice." Provenance: from the collection of William Wheeler III.
