Rubricated and ruled in red throughout, and with 5-line historiated initial in colors and gold on [b]1r showing the head of a bishop in profile. Folio, 288x190 mm, 19th-century russet morocco elaborately gilt-tooled in 16th-century French style, possibly by Louis Hagué, with cover design of intricate dark gray interlace filled in with dots surrounding onlaid brown morocco centerpiece with author and title on 3 lines, spine ends chipped, joints cracked, cords intact, cover corners worn through; contents generally clean with only scattered fingerprints and minor marginal dampstains, vertical crease in outer margin of approximately 50 leaves in second half of volume, repair in blank lower margin of [m]1 and blank outer margin of [r]3; gilt edges, richly gauffered to pattern of interlace filled in with stipplework. Mounted on the front pastedown is the description of this copy (item 21, "in old red morocco") from the 1907 Bernard Quaritch catalogue 259. Tipped in is a 1918 ALS on Quaritch letterhead from E. H. Dring to an unnamed customer, informing her of its shipment and discussing it as a specimen of early printing, with no mention of the binding. (Mantua: Johannes Schallus, [not before 15] July 1479)
Fourth edition of the 1474 Latin version of Eusebius's major work, written in the early 4th century, "the principal source for the history of Christianity from the Apostolic Age" (ODCC). The Greek original text was first published in 1544. Hain-Copinger 6711; GW 9437; BMC VII, 933; ISTC ie00127000. The binding may be the work of the French bookseller and forger Louis Hagué, who sold similar examples to Bernard Quaritch in the later 19th century under the alias J. Caulin. See Mirjam M.
