RICHARD BECK (1912-1985) ORIENT LINE TO AUSTRALIA. 1936.
39 3/4x24 3/4 inches, 101x63 cm.
Condition A.
England-born Beck studied art in Glasgow, London and Munich before settling down in London to become a graphic designer. He designed posters for Shell, London Transport and the Orient Line before migrating to Australia in 1940, where he continued working as a graphic designer and professor. Beck was an early proponent of photomontage and his work caught the eye of Tom Purvis, who explained Beck's modernist design style, observing how "The artists assemble material, combining photography and drawn design in some novel or striking arrangement. Richard Beck, with training in German Experimentalism, is successful in this method" (Poster Progress p. 93). Purvis could have also added a note on Beck's typography, of which he was always striving to raise the standard.
