Letter written by Kentucky Senator John Edwards (1748-1837) to his friend and fellow politician George W. Williams of Paris, KY, regarding the hiring of "some negro boys" for a tobacco operation: "It was your wish to have them taught the art of making segars. This we cannot undertake to do, the time required being so very great and the quantity of tobacco necessarily spoiled before they come to any degree of perfection, will render it unprofitable for us to hire hands on these conditions. If however you are disposed to place them with us for the ordinary business of the factory, be so good as to write me, the ages of the boys, whether they are active smart fellows, and what your terms are."
