Additional Details

4 of these photographs show Meredith during his first few months as the well-publicized first African-American student at the University of Mississippi. The first shows him attempting without success to pass through the ranks of state troopers with the aid of a United States Marshal on 26 September 1962. He is also shown on the day of his enrollment, 1 October; walking under heavy guard to the campus laundry, 11 October; and surrounded by reporters on 7 January 1963. The final photograph is dated 9 June 1966, and shows the shaved back of Meredith's head as he arrived in New York "to recuperate from shotgun wounds he received during his civil rights march through Mississippi."
